About Creative Transitions
Aware of the loss of learning that can happen when young people move from primary to secondary school environments, Turner Contemporary wanted to support Year 7 students across Thanet at this potentially challenging time.
Creative Transitions was a collaborative project, leading to the creation of an additive structure made by Year 7 students from 8 different schools in the area. They focused on the transition from inside to outside, filling the picture window at Turner Contemporary with an imaginative, multi-layered screen of viewing devices. Collectively this highlights elements of the landscape, and encourages the sharing of experiences.
Whilst they were focussing on the physical transition from inside to outside in this installation, we hope the main takeaway for the young people was to see how they can shape their own surroundings, and adapt the world to make it better suit them and their needs. Classes worked on consecutive days, responding to the work of the previous classes, building on their ideas and developing a collective installation which was on show to the public for several months in 2018.
