About the project
To celebrate this year’s winner of the Soane Medal, structural engineer Hanif Kara, we continued our partnership with the Soane Museum with a creative workshop exploring ‘urban mining’. A group of young designers local to the museum created a public building through model making, exploring how that same set of materials could be dismantled and reused to make something new. This work follows on from last year’s workshop celebrating the previous winners, Lacaton & Vassal.
Hanif Kara’s evocative work inspired some beautiful models focusing on structures and process. Speaking on the climate emergency, the structural engineer behind internationally acclaimed projects, including four Stirling Prize-winning buildings, said: ‘As a scientist, I like to think that hope can turn into possibilities’.
