GOSH Arts Safe Streets Campaign

with Great Ormond Street Hospital

About the project

What does a Safe Streets campaign designed and imagined by young people look like?

To prepare for the deconstruction and building work of the new Children’s Cancer Centre at Great Ormond Street Hospital, GOSH Arts were clear it should be local young people who designed the accompanying Safe Streets campaign. This included bespoke Traffic Marshal clothing for the contractors, Sisk, and a series of neon vinyls and posters displayed in shops, hospital buildings and homes along the construction route.

The vinyls and posters were developed in collaboration with the GOSH Young People’s Forum and with patients on the wards. The children and young people created patterns, inspired by standard road markings, but which experimented with scale, typography and form to create distinct designs. Children attending Coram Fields and Holborn Community Associations summer holiday club looked at warning and danger motifs found in graphic design and nature as inspiration for the Traffic Marshal’s vests, jackets, and trousers. The bespoke Sisk Traffic Marshal’s uniform is a first of its kind in the construction world!

Many thanks to all the young people who contributed to this project and helped shape the beautiful clothing and artwork now ‘on display’ along Lambs Conduit Street, Great Ormond Street, and Boswell Street. Make sure you ‘LOOK’ out and go ‘SLOW’!
