Built Environment Outreach

with Bywater

About the project

Bywater are developers who recognise the far-reaching impact of their work and are visionary with that responsibility. They consistently place regenerative design and social impact at the heart of their approach.

Following a trailblazing, collaborative, pilot co-design project between Bywater and MATT+FIONA 2022-24 which enabled local school children to co-design the tiles for the ceramic façade at Paradise, we have launched a multi-site partnership which will ultimately see school outreach at the heart of all future Bywater projects.

Both organisations recognise that the built environment is an incredible way to bring to life subjects across the curriculum from science to design & technology, and that outreach is an opportunity to break down barriers to accessing built environment careers.

So far we have undertaken two of these outreach projects:

  1. Year 5 at St Agatha’s Primary School in Kingston focussing on Neighbourhood, using the lens of Bywater’s Coombe Road housing project
  2. Year 5 at City of London Primary Academy, Islington (COLPAI) looking at Structure & Retrofit, exploring 123 Golden Lane

Both projects resulted in the children creating beautiful collaborative models at 1:100, and the children at COLPAI were able to visit the working building site at 123 Golden Lane along with members of Bywater and the design and construction team.

90% of pupils reported increased confidence in understanding the built environment.

96% felt more confident in model making.

94% felt more confident about designing.
