About Sheltered Spaces
Sited in Lakeland Arts’ Abbot Hall Gallery, the aim of the Sheltered Spaces project was for young people to design an installation that explores the idea of ‘belonging’. This was formed through a site-specific process that explores the gallery’s artwork, its spaces, the local area, and how they are connected to each other with aim that in designing this with the young people, the finished piece would increase their sense of belonging in the space.
The installation was built over two days by five young carers from the South Lakes Young Carers group and will remain in the gallery until Spring 2020 and then reinstalled in the space after the gallery’s redevelopment in 2022. By nature, the project has three lives within three different phases of the Abbot Hall Art Gallery redevelopment.
Lakeland Arts
This project was all due to the success of the collaboration between M+F and Lakeland Arts. Contrary to our usual model, Lakeland Arts ran a series of hugely successful design workshops prior to the build the work from which was used to generate the final build. So with this a very special thanks to the engagement team for their enthusiasm and eagerness to work with us and the young carers through all stages of the design process.
